Mahdis and Millenarians. Mahdis and Millenarians is a discussion of Shī‵ite groups in eighth- and ninth-century Iraq and Iran, whose ideas reflected a mixture of indigenous non-Muslim religious teachings and practices in Iraq in the early centuries of Islamic rule.

These ideas demonstrate the fluidity of religious boundaries of this period. The three Abrahamic religions in particular espouse a fundamental millenary, Messianic aspect. Christianity and Islam were borne by successful millenarian movements. While the four sects described in the book failed, another contemporary Shiʿi Mahdistic movement, that of the ʿAbbasids, succeeded and transformed Islamic society and : Wilferd Madelung.

Historian William Tucker traces their genesis in his book Mahdis and Millenarians. He examines their theology and their political and cultural beliefs. He is one of the first scholars to examine millenarianism in Islamic society. In present-day Iraq and Iran, scholars find a similar emphasis on the Mahdi and on political and economic justice.
